On a P1S, AMS 2 Pro needs Bambu’s external drying-power adapter. On a P2S, one AMS 2 Pro can use printer power for drying while the printer is in standby; drying during a print requires an external adapter. Those are different operating modes, even though the same feeder is involved.

An adapter supplies power. It does not make AMS 2 Pro a standalone dryer, establish support for every simultaneous printing mode, or raise the feeder’s drying-temperature ceiling. Start with the printer and the job you actually need it to do.

Choose the printer and mode before choosing a supply

The table below covers a single AMS 2 Pro on P1S or P2S. It combines the current AMS 2 Pro FAQ with the more specific P2S FAQ, checked on October 13, 2026.

Printer and intended use Drying power Important condition
P1S: drying mode Official external adapter required The printer must remain powered on and connected; check your exact setup instructions
P1S: print and dry from the same AMS 2 Pro Do not infer support from owning an adapter Confirm the current model/firmware instructions before relying on this mode
P2S: one unit drying in standby Printer power can supply that unit This is the standby allowance, not a promise of printer-powered drying during a print
P2S: printing while the unit dries Official external adapter required The printer and AMS firmware must support the intended mode
Either printer switched off or disconnected Standalone drying is not supported An external supply does not remove the printer connection requirement

The P2S-specific standby condition matters. A short description saying that P2S can power one unit is incomplete if your intention is to print at the same time.

Use the lookup below to keep the power requirement separate from the feature-support check. It covers one unit, not a complete multi-AMS installation.

One-unit power lookup

What does your drying route need?

Already have the official AMS 2 Pro adapter?
P1S standby dryingExternal adapter requiredP1S standby drying requires the official external adapter, the required 6-Pin connection and a powered printer. Include the official AMS 2 Pro external adapter in this route.

This lookup covers one AMS 2 Pro only. Keep the printer powered and the required 6-Pin connection in place; the external adapter does not make it a standalone dryer. Confirm the current model/firmware instructions. Multi-unit setups need their own power review.

For example, a P2S owner planning to dry one spool between print jobs has a different supply requirement from an owner planning to dry while the printer is working. A P1S owner should not buy an adapter on the assumption that power alone enables simultaneous feeding and drying from that same unit.

Keep the printer connected and powered on

AMS 2 Pro has an external power connection as well as its bus connection, but the external adapter does not make it an independent appliance. The manufacturer’s current FAQ says drying requires the 6-pin bus connection to a powered-on printer, with the printer set to drying mode.

That distinction is useful when planning overnight preparation or moving the feeder away from the printer. Buying the supply does not establish that the printer can be switched off, that the bus cable can be removed, or that drying will continue independently.

Follow the current connection and operating instructions for your exact printer, feeder and firmware. This guide explains the power choices; it is not a live cable-change procedure. Do not improvise connection or unloading steps from a power table.

Check the kit you already have

Bambu’s official AMS 2 Pro Switching Adapter was listed at $32.99 in the US store on October 13, 2026. That is a dated merchandise price, before any applicable tax or delivery charge.

Before adding it to an order, inspect the selected printer package and your retained parts:

  • The current P1S with AMS 2 Pro package advertises a Switching Adapter among its contents. Check the box and exact selected kit instead of paying for a duplicate automatically.
  • The current P2S Combo excludes the external drying adapter. If your intended supported use is drying during a print, it is a separate required purchase unless you already have the appropriate official supply.
  • A standalone AMS 2 Pro purchase and an original-AMS Combo are different packages. Neither should inherit another kit’s accessory list.

These contents are described on the current P1S and P2S pages. Match the generation and selected package; a page offering several variants is not one interchangeable box.

For a P1S owner adding a feeder later, the supply is also only one part of the connection question. Verify the required buffer, cables and tubes, and what is already present. A correct power supply is not proof of a complete installation kit.

Power does not establish every printing mode

The AMS 2 Pro FAQ directs simultaneous printing-and-drying users to the model- and firmware-specific instructions. The P2S manual, V1.0, also makes firmware support a condition of that mode.

Treat these as two separate questions:

  1. Does the unit have the required power for drying?
  2. Does this printer and firmware support the drying/feeding combination you intend?

The external adapter answers the first question where it is required. It cannot answer the second by itself. A support statement for another printer, an older firmware version or a different feed arrangement does not transfer automatically.

On P1S in particular, do not turn the external-power requirement into a promise that the same AMS unit can supply the active print while drying. Consult the current drying-function instructions for the exact supported configuration and operation before making that your plan.

A 65°C ceiling is not a universal drying recipe

The manufacturer specifies a maximum AMS 2 Pro drying temperature of 65°C, with that maximum conditional on ambient temperature above 25°C. Check the named filament’s preparation instructions rather than treating the feeder’s headline temperature as a universal recipe.

A concrete example is Bambu TPU for AMS, Technical Data Sheet V1.0. Its preparation table specifies 70°C for eight hours in a forced-air drying oven. A 65°C feeder does not meet that temperature requirement simply because the material has “for AMS” in its name. Adding a power adapter does not raise the ceiling, and this guide does not substitute a longer cycle as an equivalent recipe.

The same distinction applies more broadly: a material may be permitted through a feeder while needing a different preparation route. A low humidity reading in the enclosure is not, by itself, proof that a particular spool has completed its required drying treatment.

Check the exact grade and appropriate preparation equipment. Do not transfer the TPU sheet’s separate X1-series heat-bed method to P1S or P2S, or substitute a household oven for a specified preparation method.

Plan for more than one unit separately

The P2S FAQ describes a separate external supply for each additional unit being dried simultaneously in standby, and for each unit being dried during printing. The one-unit lookup above does not verify the cables, buffer, hub or firmware required by a larger installation.

Count the units you actually intend to dry, then follow the current connection guide for that printer. Avoid taking a system’s maximum colour count as proof that every attached unit can dry in every mode with printer power alone.

If you are also deciding where the feeder will live, placement is a separate check. Our Bambu A1 workspace guide explains why a printer’s chassis dimensions and its complete station footprint need different measurements. Its illustrated AMS lite clearances are not an AMS 2 Pro placement rule.

Before adding an adapter to the basket

Identify the printer, the supported operating mode and the exact filament grade first. Then check whether the appropriate official adapter is already included or retained.

For one P2S unit in standby, the current FAQ allows printer-powered drying. For drying during a supported P2S print, plan the external supply. For P1S, provide the required external drying power while keeping simultaneous-mode support as a separate question. In every case, the printer connection and the material’s preparation requirements still matter.
